CommonsHood is a blockchain-based “wallet app.”

Through an intuitive interface, it allows anyone to create and exchange digital tokens representing local assets, resources, and financial instruments.

Its core objective is to support social, collaborative, and sustainable economies, as well as participatory processes within local communities, by streamlining and enhancing interactions among stakeholders.

A Community Tool

CommonsHood focuses on local communities at the neighborhood, city, and town levels. The tokens generated within the CommonsHood wallet are designed to support various forms of social and community-based economies, including: “Reward and incentive mechanisms, Crowdfunding and collective purchasing initiatives, Time banks and libraries of things, Social welfare instruments and financial inclusion, Promotion systems for local and sustainable economic activities and Community currencies”

Advantages of Using Blockchain

Blockchain technology in CommonsHood enables anyone to securely and transparently create, distribute, or exchange assets of any kind in the form of tokens (both fungible and non-fungible – NFTs), as well as to program transactions designed to foster collaboration. Every transaction is securely and transparently recorded on the blockchain, ensuring that each token has a single, verifiable owner at all times.

Who Is Behind It?

CommonsHood is co-designed, developed, and tested by the Social Computing Research Group of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Turin, within the framework of participatory and inter/transdisciplinary research projects involving diverse local stakeholders.

Pilot Experiments and Fieldwork

The application has been co-designed and field-tested across several European projects: CO3 (H2020), CO-CITY (UIA), NLAB4CIT (Smart Local Administration), and CO.R.PU.S (DUT Partnership). It is continuously adapted to new contexts through social and digital research and innovation projects at national, regional, and municipal levels.Application requirements for specific implementation scenarios are co-defined alongside grassroots initiatives, urban commons management entities, third-sector organizations, and public administrations.
